Reflections on Breathwork and Trauma

Trauma shapes us in ways that often go unseen. Gabor Maté says trauma is not what happens to us but what happens inside us. This insight has deeply influenced my understanding of emotional wellness and the healing journey I guide in my breathwork sessions. Trauma is not just an event in the past; it lives within our bodies and minds, affecting how we breathe, feel, and respond to stress and anxiety. Through breathwork, I have witnessed powerful shifts in people’s mental health and connection to their inner child, offering a path toward healing that feels both gentle and profound.
Understanding Trauma Beyond the Event
Many people think trauma is only about the painful event itself. Yet, trauma’s true impact lies in how it changes our internal world. When we experience trauma, our nervous system can become stuck in a state of heightened alert or shutdown. This affects our ability to regulate emotions and manage stress. The body holds onto these experiences, often without our conscious awareness. This is why trauma can show up as anxiety, emotional numbness, or difficulty trusting ourselves and others.
In my breathwork practice, I help clients explore these internal experiences safely. Breathwork allows us to access the body’s wisdom and release trapped energy. It creates space for the inner child, the part of us that often carries the earliest wounds, to feel seen and supported. This process is not about forcing change but inviting healing to unfold naturally.
How Breathwork Supports Emotional Wellness
Breathwork is a simple yet powerful tool that anyone can use to improve mental health and emotional wellness. By focusing on the breath, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm stress responses. This shift can reduce anxiety and create a sense of safety within the body.
In my sessions, I guide people through different breathing techniques tailored to their needs. For example:
Deep diaphragmatic breathing helps ground and center the nervous system.
Rhythmic breath patterns encourage emotional release and clarity.
Gentle breath holds can bring awareness to sensations linked to trauma.
These practices support healing by reconnecting us with our body’s natural rhythms. Clients often describe feeling lighter, more present, and more connected to their emotions after breathwork. This connection is essential for nurturing the inner child and rebuilding trust in ourselves.

My Personal Journey with Breathwork and Trauma
I came to breathwork through my own experience with trauma and anxiety. For years, I struggled with overwhelming stress and a sense of disconnection from my emotions. Traditional talk therapy helped, but I felt something was missing and I yearned for a way to reach the parts of me that words could not touch.
When I discovered breathwork, it opened a new door. The practice helped me access deep layers of healing and reconnect with my inner child. I learned to listen to my body’s signals and respond with compassion rather than judgment. This personal transformation inspired me to become a breathwork facilitator so I could share this healing path with others.
In my sessions, I create a safe, trauma informed space where people can explore their breath and emotions without pressure. I understand how vulnerable this work can be, so I move at a pace that feels right for each individual. The goal is to support healing that feels authentic and sustainable.
Healing Is Possible Through Connection and Breath
Trauma can feel isolating, but healing happens through connection: to ourselves, to our bodies, and to others. Breathwork offers a bridge to that connection by helping us access the present moment and release what no longer serves us. It invites us to care for our inner child with kindness and patience.
If you are carrying the weight of trauma, stress, or anxiety, know that you are not alone. Breathwork can be a gentle companion and supportive practice on your path toward emotional wellness and healing. I invite you to explore this practice with curiosity and openness. Together, we can create space for transformation and hope.
